XP laptop can't get past initial windows XP screen....
HI,
My HP Pavilion Entertainment laptop won't start.
I've tried booting into safe mode. It loads up files until it reaches one called mup.sys, then it goes blue screen of death which displays something on the lines of:
"STOP C0000218 {Registry file failure}
systemroot\system32\config \software
It's log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable"
If I try to boot windows normally it gets to the point of the windows XP loading screen but the progress bar simply runs for a few minutes then it blue screens...
If this was a desktop, I'd just take out the hard drive, put it in as a slave on another machine and run a fix on the drive, but it's a laptop, and I don't want to wipe any of the data on it, but obviously can't get it to start at all, so any ideas welcome in order to get access to the data there before maybe having to do a fresh XP install....

Hi, will that wipe everything on the drive?
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting.

Try booting from Windows Install Disk. There are repair options including auto-repair and repair console. The first may fix you problem automatically (though it most possibly wouldn't) while the former may help you to make a backup or disk check (which will aslo fix everything it can).
Also, try bootable linux or windows.

HI, I've booted from an XP disc and selected the option for repair, but that just asked me for an administrator password, which then brought me to a dos screen with C:\Windows
Not sure where to go from there...

I'd love to, but I get landed at C:\windows after I select R and that's it!
I tried entering those commands, and it just seems to have wiped the system folder!

are you sure you did "copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config \system" and it didn't result in an error?
To repair the installation you shouldn't go to the recovery console, you should go on with installing until it asks you if you want to repair the installation.
