RIS Install Error: The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD is needed.
Hey Guys:
I am trying to use Windows 2000 Server Remote Installation Services to deploy Windows XP Professional with SP2 to around 100 client computers. Right now I am in the testing/configuration stage and I have run into a problem. When the GUI portion of the install starts up on any of the client computers, an error is thrown immediately:
Files Needed
The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD is needed.
Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.
Copy Files from:
C:\$WIN_NT$.~LS\I386
Here is how I configured RIS,
1.) Setup RIS on a Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 4 machine
2.) Used risetup to create image of a Volume License Windows XP Pro with SP2 cd
3.) Created .sif file using SetupMgr.exe and added to RIS via DSA.MSC
4.) Added nic drivers per Microsoft KB Q315279
5.) Rebooted RIS
Here is what happens on the client,
1. Client computer boots to pxe environment and connects to RIS
2. Able to Login successfully
3. Text portion of setup completes successfully
4. Computer restarts
5. GUI portion of setups starts up and then fails.
Here is what I have tried,
1. Installed Windows XP manually using my Volume License cd, just to make sure the cd wasnt corrupted. Notice that was the general problem people are having when I googled the error. The cd was able to install with no problems on multiple machines.
2. Tried to apply hotfix from Microsoft per KB Q308508, however hotfix would not install since it is only intended for Windows 2000 Servers with SP2 and below. Mine has SP 4.
3. Re-created image on RIS server
4. Modified the .sif file to include OemFilesPath to point to the RIS servers share that contains the i386 files.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Also, I have attached my .sif file if you want to take a peak.
Thanks!!!

Thanks for the article. Here is what I found based on that article. I booted a client machine I tried to install WinXP on using RIS to the recovery console and sure enough the c:\$WIN_NT$.~LS\I386 is empty! Which is obviously the problem.
So the trouble has to either be with the image the RIS is creating or my cd's are bad. I am thinking the cd's are not bad, as I am able to manually install WinXP using them.
Any other thoughts?

If the CD's install otherwise, then they are good.....
Not being familiar with RIS, perhaps the $ signs in the path are messing with it ability to copy the directory. ?? Possible? If so, I can't offer a workaround for that, perhaps someone else with RIS Expertise might jump in.... Is it possible to redirect the source file on another host from RIS ?

I haven't done this type of setup, but it seems that there is a path mismatch somewhere. The asms message usually means the setup is looking in the wrong place. At the bottom of the article, you'll see the Methods to test the path....
