The best way to prevent any potential corruption to your Exchange databases is to first dismount all your Exchange databases. This can be performed by running the command net stop MSExchangeIS from a command prompt.

You can then defragment the disk in the usual method. Once defragging is complete, return to the command prompt and execute net start MSExchangeIS to re-mount the Exchange databases.

Bear in mind that what you are doing is defragging the entire volume, and the Exchange databases files themselves will not be defragged. To do this, you need to do an Offline Defragmentation of the databases, but it is very seldom necessary to do this.

So as long as the IS has been dismounted within ESM, I can do a normal defrag on the volume without any concerns to the database being corrupted?
Besides using MS defrag utility, is there a better third party product that you would recommend?
