Virtual PC 2007 & Viruses etc

I'm curious (and slightly lazy/busy) .. are there any viruses/spyware/whatever out there that can infect 'the whole machine' if the browser that was infected is running on a VM ?

I'm really only just starting to look into Virtual Machines for our workplace (yeah, I know, catch up). Something that occurred to me was that if each instance is truly 100% totally isolated from the machine, then why isn't everyone uses a VM to surf the web with, keeping the base machine in perfect condition in the case of a disaster/infection.

Or is my thinking flawed ?

Doh!

I can see that ... thanks for pointing out my dumb thinking :)

Still, quite a good idea to create a virtual machine purely for surfin' the darker side of the net !

Thanks,
