Communicating between Win 2000 Pro and Win XP Pro machines across a TCP/IP network

I have just upgraded two machines at a radio station with XP Professional and all of their other workstations use 2000 Professional.  They are also using a static IP system for communication between the systems and none of them are configured for Internet access.  My problem is that the two XP units see each other and can share files with no problem but the 2000 Pro machines are requiring a username/password combination from the XP machines before allowing access.  Every system is visible to all other systems across the network and they all reside in the same workgroup; the only issue is getting the 2000 units to allow access since they need to have paths created for the station's software to work.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm sure I'm just missing a setting somewhere, but I can't see it.
