External Drive Dissapears

I recently reformated my computer. I have Vista 32 bit which is what i was using before as well. After the rinstall i could not see 3 of my external (usb ) drives. If i take these drives out of the enclosure and connect them directly to the pc via IDE they show up. Any idea on how to make them work in the usb mode again? thanks in advance for any help

check If USB is at all being detected, if not then USB converter might have gone out of order, try replacing them with a new one.
or
check if the drive needs USB 2.0 to run, or is it USB 1.1 comptible. try to insert into a different computer or differnt USB port.

Check that your USB Hub (internal) is detected and operting - through Device Manager.  Check for updates from your computer manufacturer.

i have tried to use them in a different port and they do not show up. They are USB 2.0 as are the ports. I have tried this setup exactly as it was and also tried moving things around. I have a printer and the other usb drives connected and they all show up. I do not see the usb drives that arent working in device manager either.
It most likely is just a driver issue. Perhaps your hard drives are not 1.1 compatible, and your usb ports are running on legacy drivers and can't operate in 2.0 mode.

What's the make / model of your computer? Or if it's a generic build, whats' the model # and manufacturer of your motherboard?
Although the drives do not show in Windows Explorer - do they show in Device Manager?  If they show in device manager, Uninstall the device (through device manager) while the drives are plugged in; then unplug the drives and plug back in so that the system will redetect them.  You could also try "Update Driver" and have windows auto-detect.
This is an Asus m2n sli deluxe motherboard. I used the same driver disk as before which cam with the board. The ports are 2.0 as are the drive enclosures. They do not show in device manager but i have others of the same brand and drive make that do show up.
Try Start | Run | diskmgmt.msc and check to see if there are any conflicts.  If none, as the above comments you may want to check for new drivers for the SB chipset; and, or check to see if the file usbstor.inf is present in C:\Windows\Inf.  Good luck.
did you try the same drive with USB on a different computer?
