Nvidia video driver will not install

Dell Dimension 8300 Windows XP Professional 1GB
Removed Nvidia 5200 128 mb card & replaced with Nvidia 6200 card
Hardware wizard detects Nvidia 6200 card
Driver will not install--"The parameter is incorrect"
Dell/Microsoft/XFX cannot find out why

Is it the Cd that came with the card or one downloaded from nvidia's site?
I would recommended the downloaded one either way
and make sure xp is patched up all all that.

What SP is XP at on your computer ? SP2? or SP3?

You're going to have to do a registry edit.

Click Start - Run - type in REGEDIT
Before proceeding make a backup of your registry by clicking File - Export and saving it someplace safe

Direct yourself to HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\NVIDIA Corporation
Right click it and click on Permissions
Give the username you're logged in as Full Control.

Reboot your machine, and try installing the driver again.

Do you have an Antivirus running that you can disable before the install?
TheProfessor-tried everything disabled-safe mode, etc.
Did you try Driver Cleaner? Driver Cleaner Professional Edition is a program which helps you to remove parts of drivers that are left after uninstalling the old drivers. The program is for ATI, nVidia, Creative, Realtek, SIS, 3Dfx, S3 and more drivers. First you need to uninstall the drivers from the control panel, then reboot. After rebooting, run the program. If you really want a good description of what steps you should take, then you really need to read the readme file included in the zip file and installation as it contains a detailed step by step description.

souseran, et als: MS research tried it with NSW/NIS 2008 turned off in msconfig--still will not install.
Removed GF6200 & replacd original equipment FX5200. IT WILL NOT INSTALL THE DRIVER EITHER. The installer runs then says "system has not been changed, try running the program at a later time. The Parameter is Incorrect.
Any ideas on what setting or forgotten program might block the install? .
No ideas on what may be blocking the install. However, have you tried doing a System Restore to a point when you had the old card in the box? Then instead of uninstalling the driver, simply do a controlled Shutdown, replace the card, and when you boot back up Update the driver.

how are you trying to install the driver - presuming its an exe and you double click it ? Just as a thought as something to try what about re naming the exe ( assuming it was the downloaded driver ) renaming it to a zip file and extracting the drivers from the zip file ( which used to be the downloaded exe ) then go to device manager ( right click my computer --> properties --> hardware tab --> device manager button )

And go to the graphics card and right click on it and go to properties and then update driver --> when it goes through the wizard tell it no to finding a driver and no to automatically finding one etc etc until you get to the bit where you can install the driver manually and then point it to the extracted driver that you downloaded  and unzipped.

Then see what happens
Start it in safe mode (Tap <F8> as it boots). Remove any nVidia drivers in Add Remove Programs. Uninstall display driver(s) in device manager. Reboot. Reinstall chipset/AGP driver. Install nVidia display driver.

What did you find in the BIOS? A little more than "all of the above have been tried" would be helpful. When you tried the various suggestions, did you get error messages? If so, what were they? Did settings revert to previous? What were the BIOS settings? AGP?x or PCI or ePCI?

What happened when you tried Driver Cleaner? Errors? Nothing at all? Screen turned upside down?

"It didn't work" type answers don't give us much to go on when trying to troubleshoot further.

If you right-click on the device in Device Manager and check the driver, then Driver Details, have you tried making a list of all the files there, then booting into safe mode and manually removing each of those files, shutting down the system, swapping out the card and bringing the system back up? If so, what happened when you tried this?
MS has spent more than 25 hours trying to fix. At this point I simply cannot recall the details-suffice it to say that what has been suggested has been tried. Thanks
