FTP: cannot ftp webserver from command line or third party software

Here we go,
I have recently had a problem trying to ftp to a third party webserver to upload my files for publishing. I have tried a number of applications to do the ftp, namely, Dreamweaver 8, MS frontpage, filezilla (the list goes on) and also command line. Command line error can vary from connection closed by remote host to unknown error number. I have tried disabling passive ftp in ie7 browser settings.
I have ruled out an issue with the webserver itself , as i contacted the vendor and was also able to ftp to it from another pc that i borrowed and had connected to my dsl router. That also rules out the router.
I have also tried adding exceptions into windows firewall for ftp on port 21 and when this didnt work i turned off the firewall altogether. still no joy.
My hair is starting to fall out over this. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
- Is this happening for this FTP site only ? try ftp://ftp.sunet.se/
- Did you try to access the FTP from another location (from home if the problem occurs from office, a friend if it occurs from home)

That'll help to locate the problem

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. But i get unknown host when i try to ftp://ftp.sunset.se. As i said in original question i have already used another pc in this location and it works, so issue is with my pc.

My dns settings appear to be correct, i.e. pointing to my router. There is definetly something interfering with ftp locally, but i can't seem to figure it out.
In a DOS window, does the commande "nslookup www.google.fr" give you the IP addresses of google ?
Same for ftp.sunet.se

Are you connecting from home ? no third-party firewall that might block outgoing FTP traffic ? (not the one from XP/Vista, it's not blocking outgoing traffic)
Are you using a proxy to get outside ?

Please, describe your conf a little bit more, that might help

See you,
Hi,
results of nslookup below. Not using a proxy. i am at home and connect to internet via dsl modem. I have no third party firewall installed. i can ping the ftp.sunset.fr from my router but not command prompt.
windows firewall is on but have exceptions in for ftp on port 21. I have also tried it with the windows firewall off. Basically i cannot connect to the webserver by ftp from my pc. Other pc's are fine (i have tested with another pc from home aswell and it worked)

There might be something in your modem/router configuration, but I can't figure out what is wrong.
Did you restrict some mac address or something that might explain why this PC seems a little bit restricted

Maybe a "load defaults" on the router might help - be sure to have you login/passwd and all tech info to recreate your connection

Or, is this computer experiencingg network problems (apart from the ftp problem) - impossible to share folders in your lan, or something ?
Already tried resetting the router to factory defaults.  Thing is I can ping any ftp site from the router. It's as if there is a problem with the ftp connection from the pc to the router.
One thing to note: The pc was originally setup on a LAN and on a domain. I have removed it from the domain (just incase it was some sort of policy causing the issue).
