Default for Shutdown menu in Wndows XP
I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop that is joined to a domain. When the shutdown button is clicked, the default choice is hibernate. i have slected shutdown and then shtudown the laptop but everytime I select the shutdown button is pressed, the hibernate selection is the default. How do I change this?
If you do not need hibernate, disable and it will remove it as an option. Start>control panel>Power options, and click the Hibernate tab. Uncheck the "enable hibernation" box.
The Classic menu will remember your last shutdown command, not the XP menu :
1. Right-click the taskbar, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Start Menu tab.
3. The option for Classic Start menu should be selected. Click Customize.
4. Under Advanced Start menu options, click to select the Display Log Off check box, click OK, and then click OK.

Greenclock - I believe the poster is talking about the shutdown button in the start menu, not the power button.

I am talking about the shutdown button on the start menu. I have tried both solutions, both separately and collectively with no positive results. Very strange

If I remove the hibernate option then it defaults to Restart, no matter how many times I select the shutdown option and then shut the computer down
Disabling hibernation still presents you with a hibernation option? Very strange indeed - I'll play a bit in my lab and see if I can replicate

Yes, I have switched to the classic menu and performed a shutdown and still the default choice is hibernation. ISS1199 - If I remove the hibernation option then that option does not appear
