Can I promote a 2008 member server to a domain controller in a 2000 domain?

I have 2 servers running Windows 2000 SP4. I would like to replace them with new Windows 2008 boxes. Both 2000 servers are running in native mode. When I run the adprep.exe from the 2003 server cd adprep runs fine, but running DCPromo on the 2008 box tells me to run adprep from the 2008 cd. The adprep from the 2008 cd does nothing. Can I promote a 2008 member server to a domain controller in a 2000 domain?

Yes you can. Did you run 2008-adprep on the 2000 server or on the 2008 itself? Has to be done at the 2000 server.

I think I see the issue. The current 2000 server only has a cd drive (no DVD) so I copied the adprep.exe to a thumb drive and then to the c: drive on the 2000 server, when I ran it nothing happened. It sounds like I need to move the sources folder to the 2000 server. I will attempt again tomorrow.

The dcprpmo worked fine after a reboot and the 2000 machine.

Thanks
