In Java, I believe interned Strings are stored in the heap.  What about the data structure that holds references to these interned Strings?  Is it also stored in the heap?  And what sort of collection is this?  I remember reading that it was once a regular hash map, but due to memory issues, it was changed to a map containing weak references.  Is this true?

Thanks.
