no beep on startup, no display
Win XP Alienware system; No beep on startup; new power supply 8 weeks old. Planned to reseat RAM, Video card and CPU and retry. Hope you can visualize scenario: Removed RAM, battery, disconnected drives; removed video card; in process of removing CPU removed 4 screws and pulled cooling fins; cpu came with (glued to bottom of fins). Question is how to re-seat CPU. The CPU latch is closed; I would like to remove cpu from fins, open cpu socket latch, seat cpu, close latch, and then replace fins and tighten screws. But I don't want to damage cpu removing it from fins, or don't want to damage socket by inserting cpu without socket latch open. Is there a trick to separating the cpu from the fins without any damage? Once the two are separated, do I need to add more glue or can I just reseat the cpu and lay the fins on top and screw them down to the main board?

thank you everyone; I was afraid to use any tool until I heard from someone who had been there, done that. Punky, I was a little confused with your suggestion because when I lifted the heat sink, the entire unit came up. What concerned me was that the cpu latch was closed, so i didn't see how I was going to re-seat the cpu without first removing it from the heat sink so I could then open the cpu latch, seat the cpu, then re-seat the heat sink on top of it, I will do all of this today and if not successful will need to replace MB as all other posibilities will have been eliminiated. Hey, it's only money!
