How do I auto-logoff/force logoff for users that leave their pc unattended with databases etc open?

no zenworks. running nw client 4.91.4 (latest)  Have ssaver set to 'on resume' force password but would like to logoff them off the network completely and ensure they log in again.  Force logoff button is available if any user comes up and wants to log them off and log themselves in.  They shouldn't have to do that.  maybe they will learn?  Is there a policy somewhere or a reg hack or maybe just a nw client setting or group of settings I don't know about?  Thanks in advance.  Your answers last questions solved a critical issue.

If you have admin rights you can do this by
1.) Click Start -> Select Run
2.)in the dialog box type "Shutdown /i" with out quotes
3.) Add the computers you want to log off
4.) Select "log off" from the drop down menu

This will allow you to forcefully shutdown, restart, or log off users and give them a timed warning as well.
I know the above isn't exactly what you were looking for, but maybe it will help.

The tool I think you want isn't free, no matter what you use on the back end.  Forcing idle logoff without an advanced security tool is fine and dandy - unless you want to gracefully shut down and/or close open applications to avoid database and/or file corruption.  That's one of the problems with allowing the "force logoff" option on the screen saver login dialog.

Novell's product that will gracefully log a user out is called Novell Secure Login.  It provides a lot of other security features (great for HIPPA compliance) plus has a policy-based forced logout that will shut down your applications first.  If you're a healthcare provider, Secure Login is a godsend.  It's also good for defense contracters and banks and other organizations with a high level of security compliance required.

However, you can shut off the "force logoff" option on the client, so only the user's password can be used when the screen saver login dialog is presented, which will prevent the casual walk-by user from forcing logoff, which crashes any open programs and potentially corrupts open databases and files.  The "force logoff button" setting is in the Client32 Properties, Advanced Login tab.  I thought it defaults to "Off" but perhaps I'm wrong.  If it's off, the button doesn't show on the screen saver login dialog.

ASKER

Thanks.  I started to check out SecureLogin but it didn't mention price right off so that's not a good sign, as in, we probably can't afford it.  The screensaver/lock workstation method is great but if you're a power user or above you can easily turn that off.  Was hoping there was a novell login policy or reg that would turn off their access everytime they logged in?  Maybe not?
