troubleshooting Question

I have had occassion to attempt using this function many times during the last fifteen years, I always try it, I always think I will be able to now figure out the mistake(s) I have made in the past, and it never works. Well, it works, but not the way I want it to. I want to copy one field from the last record, not the entire record. I understand the test box on the form, name it correctly but I think I get something wrong in the "Default" part. I go to the text box properties/Data/Default Value and have tried (ATTENDED is the name of the field I want to copy) and have tried Attended (then "Attended" appears), = Attended, [Attended], = [Attended], I have included the path....I have tried everything that I think might be meant in the instructions, but there is something that I am not getting. All fields are filled which cause a problem with primary key duplications and fields that I don't want. I know this has to be a basic misunderstanding on my part, but I would appreciate it if somebody could point it out. Thanks
