Exchange Cal versus 200x Server Cals

1. When configuring a new Exchange server and new Domain Controller, do I need exchange CALS for contacts that will have only a mail box?
2. Do these Contact only Exchange accounts need 2xxx server CALS?

So if a a user is only a contact in Exchange (with no network log on) he will need an Exchange CAL, but does he need a Windows Sever CAL?
No.  Contacts don't have mailboxes.

In Exchange Version 6.5.7638.1 when I create a contact, it will give me the option to create a mailbox for this contact. I am sure it needs an Exchange CAL, but does it need a Windows Sever CAL
I have no idea what Exchange v6.5.7638.1 is..   In Exchange 2003, and 2000, there is no mailbox for a contact.  You can create an email address for them, but unless they are actually taking up space in your datastore, then they do NOT need a CAL.  Since only Users can have mailboxes, not contacts or DLs, you do not need a CAL for them.

When I create a contact in AD, all its creats is a mailbox. See attched screen shot. My question is does this contact, mailbox only requires a server CAL. I believe it needs an Exchange CAL, but how about a server CAL?
Doc2.doc
It's not a mailbox but just a referral to an email address. So that the contact shows up in the address book.. you put the users email address in which is not part of your domain.

It is not a mailbox and does not require a CAL for either.

I would suggest you close the thread and assign points to exx1976.
+1 to what DMTG said.
I submitted a request for attention asking them to assign you the points.
No, exx1976 answered the question correctly and the OP was confused.  A contact does not require a license and does not have a mailbox.  I still believe exx1976 posted the correct information just got flustered with the OP and was unable to rephrase the answer.

Thanks for the review WhackAMod.
