Will data flow between devices on a common switch without going through a router?

I have six PCs, which I want to pull a lot of small files from a networked HDD.  The HDD is rated at 1Gbps.  It is going very slowly.  The HDD needs to see the www.  If I have a switch to a router, then the HDD and the PCs all on a 1Gbs switch, will data flow from the HDD to the PCs without going thru (and being slowed down by) the router?  I have software in each PC that goes to get the files from the HDD.

and these nework hdd's are slow as they have a very low memory and processor supporting thier copying function,to try this example copy data from pc to pc with giabait and see the difference.
