Can Send faxes but not receive faxes when connected via ADSL filtered line
I have a small home network connected to the internet via an ADSL Netgear Router. The printer, one of two on the network is set up to send and receive faxes via the adsl line. I have the standard adsl filter in line for the fax. The fax setup has tested 100% pass at all times, and sending faxes is perfect. If I reconnect the fax to my normal phone line the fax can both send and receive perfectly. However when connected via the adsl line, though the filter, the fax,set to auto answer after two rings, gives a shorter ring intermittently (varies from one second interval to twenty second intervals). The fax screen shows "Ringing" and the lightning symbol appears, but then goes back to the normal standby screen. During one of my tries the fax eventually made contact after about two minutes. I have been to the HP troubleshooting page and been through all the suggestions. I have tried three sets on adsl filters/phone connection, including two brand new sets.
Can you add a pone to the phone connection on the fax? Sometimes the additional ringer load resolves the issue.

Thanks for the suggestion Rick, but this did not work. The fax line continued as before. Interestingly the phone ringing was almost continuous with short breaks between fairly long rings.

Rick thanks for the further comments.
This is the third all-in one that I have had connected to my adsl line via the filter. The previous ones all worked fine both ways. I have only had this one for two months, and it was only very recently that I realised that we were not receiving faxes. I do not think that there has been any change in the adsl line at this time. I tthink this would be too much of a co-incidence. I have been trying to avoid taking the printer back to the suppliers, but it might be where I have to go. I was hoping that someone else might have had a identical problem. I did want to set the auto answer to one ring (thinking along the sames lines that you have suggested), but it will only accept 2 to 6 rings.

(1) This unit is designed to be used in your country, and is configured to do so?
(2) When you replaced the previous All-In-Ones, you did replace all the leads that came in the box, as well as the device itself? (cables/connectors can of course go faulty)
(3) Do you have any other extensions on this particular telephone line? If so, do you have micro-filters attached to the other extensions? Is there anything connected to the other extensions? Is it possible to remove the extension cable entirely? (BT in UK provide a two part socket which enables the user to completely disable any ancillary equipment connected to the rear of the master socket, such as an extension cable).

Re-reading the Comments, I initially thought this was the third one that didn't work. As this is not the case, it sounds like it is a problem with the HP unit itself. Out of interest, why did you replace the last one? If it went faulty, maybe you've had a surge on the line which has caused a problem. It is my understanding, and experience, that BT in UK do not protect consumer's equipment from lightning strikes.

Thanks for your comments
1) The unit is configured for my country (south Africa)
2) The previous all-in-one had a faulty print head, which could not be replaced, apparently out of stock. I initially used the existing cables which had worked fine, but have completely replaced these twice now.
3) I do not have any other devices on the telephone line -when I put a telephone on the line this was even worse (see my comments above)
I am going to try my fax on and adsl line at my work place and if the fault is still evident there, return the all0in one to the suppliers.
My thanks for your comments.
