How do I upgrade Samba on SUse Linux
Hi guys, I'm new to Suse Linux and I've a client running a lower version of Samba. I need to upgrade theirs to the latest version. Can you guide me step by step if possible on how to do this upgrade? Also if there's a problem how to backup and revert
Can I ask why you need to do this upgrade? What does the latest version of Samba have that the old version doesn't? I hope you're not planning to install Samba 4 in a production environment!

Hi, the reason was one 64 bit server introduced into the network causes some users on winxp can't connect to it. Its just a normal windows 2003 server that is joined to the domain. Can I ask what is the package required? Just the newest samba package or have some other dependencies ?

Found this site http://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/samba/3.0/sles10/i386/ there're so many files. How do I go about doing it? There isn't a single exe file like in windows to install ?
I'm almost certain this won't fix your problem, the fact that it's a 64bit server is irrelevant. If I were you I'd be looking at the /var/log/messages file. Open a terminal window and type: tail -f /var/log/messages
Then go and connect from a Windows machine. If there's a problem, chances are the cause will appear in the log.

thanx for the advice. From the same machine, certain user account can access the windows server and certain user accounts can't stating an RPC error occured. This is not a pc problem but rather a user account problem as I've tried from different pcs with the same result.
Is this samba server a standalone box? Or is it joined to a domain?
Perhaps it's something simple. Have you used smbpasswd to set samba passwords for your users?

This is a samba acting as an Ldap server in a Domain. Users can login fine to the PDC but when I do a \\servername, some user accounts are able to see the files but some users will get a straight RPC protocol error

Hi, anybody care to comment? Need to upgrade my Samba
Why don't you just use Yast, Software, Online updates like I suggested? That should be done regularly anyway.

Also within yast there should be an option for backing up, or you can use a livecd like knoppix and then partimage, with which you can make images of your partitions to other HD's or network locations.
