Error Saving Webpage - in Windows Vista and IExplorer 7

I simply having problem lately saving ANY web page in ANY format from ANY site into ANY directory.  It may occurred after a couple of the Windows update, but I am not sure.  My environment is Dell with Centrino Duo, Windows Vista and IExplorer 7.  I do not have problem with other operating systems like XP or Windows 98.

I have searched this site and others, including Microsoft support, about this error message.  But they don't fit in my situation.  I just cannot even save a simple web page in any format.

I appreciate any help anyone can provide.  Thanks in advance.

When you try to save a web page using the Web Page, complete (*.htm; *. html) or Web Archive, single file (*.mht) options in Internet Explorer, you may receive the one of the following error messages:
This Web page could not be saved to the selected location.
Error saving web page.

The probable cause is that the web page contains a link to a style sheet, which resides on a different server than that where the page is located. Due to a recent security update (MS02-023 Patch or later), Microsoft Internet Explorer blocks access to the style sheet code if the code is on a different domain/server. Microsoft has confirmed that this is a Microsoft product issue.

To avoid the error message, please follow these instructions:

When you choose Save As from your browser's menu, change the Save As Type from Web page, complete to Web Page, HTML only.

IKZ, thank you so much for responding so fast.  I have already read the above problem and tried the above steps before I posted my question.  I have even tried to saved it as text file and it still didn't work.  I even tried to save this page and again it didn't work.  Is there any other suggestion you may have?  Thanks again for responding so fast.

szetoa--You seem to feel this may have had something to do with a recent Update.  If so, perhaps try a System Restore to a date just before you installed the update.  If that clears up the problem, you can reinstall the various updates one by one to see which is causing the problem.

jcimarron, thank you for your response.  The problem is I am not sure what cause the problem.  I also just let the PC do the auto update every time it says it has update.  I've never had my own PC before until my company closed down last year.  All these time the support team from my previous company will handle all problems, but no more.  So sorry for my ignorance troubling you experts trying to solve the problem myself.

szetoa--No trouble at all.
A System Restore (in simple terms) allows you to take the PC back to an earlier time.  You do not have to know the problem.  All updates that you made after the date you choose for the System Restore will be deleted.
You reach System Restore from Start|All Programs|Accessories|System Tools|System Restore.  Just follow the directions.  When you have chosen a date and clicked Next, System Restore will take over.  A reboot is involved, but you do not have to do anything until you finally get a message telling you the System Restore has succeeded or not.  Just click that message off.

Thanks jcimarron again.  Do you think it is a good idea to "restore" the system to previous version?  It seems the updates mostly dealt with the security leak or something.  I have to update the virus protection signature every other day and other softwares asking for update every week.  If I ignore them, they creep up the next time I turn on my PC.  There were even times the update were done without asking my permission first.  Will using another browser solve this problem?  Netscape or Firefox, etc?
szetoa--"Do you think it is a good idea to "restore" the system to previous version?"
You seem to feel this may have had something to do with a recent Update.  So a System Restore to a date prior to installing those updates will uninstall them.   It would be one of the fastest ways to diagnosis whether one of the Updates is the problem.  There is almost no downside to doing this, except for the time spent.
Yes, I agree the Updates are important, so regardless of the outcome, you should install the updates one by one and see if the problem returns after each reinstallation.
If one of the Updates is the cause, post back and we can try to help with the next step.  (The way you install Updates one by one is to click the Custom button rather than the Express button at the beginning of the Windows Update procedure.  You will be offered a choice of updates and can install each separately.)
If the problem is fixed even after reinstallation, it would seem one of the original updates was corrupt or there was some other issue.
If none of this has helped, also post back.

Hi jcimarron, I was so frustrated that I cannot save any important page like reservation / order confirmation.  This morning I went ahead and downloaded and installed the Firefox3 browser.  Now I do not have problem saving web pages.  So I think my problem is temporary fixed.  I just took a look at the system upgrade history and amazingly I found four updates very closed to each other after the Windows Service Pack 1 was applied on 7/29/08.  The four updates were 7/29, 8/1, 8/7 and 8/8.  I will go ahead and do the restore to the point right after the Service Pack 1 was applied and will report back.  Thanks again, jcimarron.

I just run the "Restore" and I got this error, no matter which restore point I picked.

System Restore did not complete successfully.  Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation. (0x8004230F)

You might want to try System Restore again and choose a different restore point.  For more information, see System Restore: frequently asked questions.

Firefox seems to be the way to go, for now.
szetoa--" I will go ahead and do the restore to the point right after the Service Pack 1 was applied and will report back. "
NO, you do it to a time right BEFORE the SP1 was applied, assuming that is the date about when the problem started.
Otherwise I would go back to a time when the earliest of the other updates was installed--7/29.

Hi jcimarron, here's  the update.  I rebooted the PC and tried the restore again.  This time it passed through the "Preparing to restore system" window and did shutdown and rebooted the PC.  When I log on again, it has an error.  It's similar to above format except the message is like (forgot to jog down the exact wording): "An unexpected error has occurred during system restore" or something like that with no error number.  I then had to do the "Undone system restore".

I have had enough of messing with my PC now.  I will just use the Firefox browser.  Just wondering why no one else has this problem ???????

Anyway, thank you for your time and effort.  I am going to reward the points to you.  Thanks again.

It could be the solution to others but not in my case.  But I really, really appreciate the time and effort in trying to solve my problem.
