resizing images

i have recently run into bandwidth problems because of the size of the images i am allowing users to upload.

i basically want to write a script that will loop though all images in my images directory and check the size of the image, as in memeory size.

if it is over xkb i want to re-size the iumage hopefully losing none of the quality.

i will do this in stages but the first thing i want to do is take an image and resize it to a given height and width hence reducing the size of the image.

i know the resize is possible, does php have built in functions for this? will i lose image quality and could someone give me some exampkle code for the resize?

once i have got this working i will be able to sort the rest myself. i dont need any help with checking the filsize etc, just the code to do the resize of a.jpg resized to height x width y named b.jpg for e.g

thanks in advance.
