recording TV from a S-video input in the computer
Hi,
I was wondering if there is a way (there probably is..!) to record video and audio signals from my tv. I have a S-video output on my receiver and an input in my computer. I plugged in a S-video cable and I wanted to know if there is a program that I could user that would recognize the video/audio input, play in on my cpu monitor and that could let me record tv as AVI, Mpeg or any kind of file. I'm running windows vista ultimate.
thank you!

p.s. I dont want to use a TiVo, trying to find alternate solution

well... i found how, using SageTV, I can record... but I have no sound :\ any idea on how to get it to work? (I have composite wires plugged too)
You have to plug in a sound connection between the TV and the Hauppauge card in addition to the video.
However ... if you're simply recording a "normal" channel (i.e. not a protected channel that requires a cable or satellite descrambler), you can just connect the coaxial input to the Hauppauge card and tune it to the channel you want to record -- that will have both the audio and video [and you can watch something else on your TV at the same time].

Capture cards is the work around here it gives you a PVR which you can use to to watch TV.
Since you are using a receiver instead of the video / audio output channels on the TV, I found the only way to get sound from the receiver ( amp?) plug the audio cable into the CD audio socket on the amp to line in on the computer.
You may get a feedback hum though.
Check the audio volume control on the taskbar has line in enabled via the advanced recording tab.
What's the TV make does it have the red white and yellow video outputs front and rear?

well I couldn't get video when I plugged it in the amp. so i plugged directly the s-vid cable in the receiver, but there are no "second" composite plugs so I can plug sound too. So I tried to plug the sound in the amp, but it doesn't work. Seems like there's a problem with my amp's output... I'll try to plug it in cd audio socket when i'll get home!
When you say "receiver" are you referring to your TV? If so, it should also have audio outputs.
If these are connected to your amplifier, the amplifier should also have at least one additional set of outputs => perhaps a set of "record out" or "preamp out" jacks.
In any event, you need to connect: (a) EITHER the s-video or Composite outputs to the Hauppauge video inputs; and (b) the audio connections (should be a stereo pair - L & R) to the audio inputs. The "composite" plugs are VIDEO ... not Audio.

well I have my s-video connected directly from the TV video out and audio out left and right, I had to add a couple of adapters so the s-video cable became a standard rca and the same with audio.
With the cable tv set top box it also has video out and audio out L/R
Dont use the composite the s-video is a great quality.
As i said earlier whats the make of the TV?
Also what's the capture card?
This is Vista are you running a media center?

Is your amp connected to the receiver> TV?
so that when you play your TV it comes through the stereo system?
Then you need to check where you hooked the TV into it what channel?
I have my TV plugged into the AMP on LD/DVD
ah I see Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI whats the model?
here's a manual, read the manual may or may not be exactly your card.

are you sure it will work with Vista?
you also have this Radion card is it also a capture card?
Or a card with TV out

here I am, sorry! I managed to get everything working properly by connecting the computer directly to the satellite receiver, bypassing the amp. The problem with this method is that there is no sound coming from the tv or the amp, the only sound output goes directly into the computer. I can record shows with video and sound, but not watch them real time on the tv, I can only watch them on the computer. If you have an idea of why the amp won't send an outgoing video and sound signal, tell me! But if not, I don't really mind, I'll deal with it.
The amp is a Harman Kardon. I plugged the satellite receiver in video1 input and the computer in video1 output, I don't get why it doesn't work!

To further expand,
I have an AV selector 3 way splitter that connects the TV out to the splitter then one audio cable left and right stereo to AMP for stereo sound. I simply swap these around, it's a pain but until we can get a two way there is no choices.
Since I ran out of available connections on the Tv to have sound to everything.
I dont use the my AMP for the video only audio.

Thank you for all your help, got it to work now :). I used a splitter male to 2 RCA female for the audio cable, so I can get sound on the TV and on the computer at the same time. The rest is ok, I just have to swap the cables to reverse and watch the recorded media. Thanks.
