Remotely Mapping Network Drives

I have a setup using a network camera, a NAS box, a basic router all connected to a POE switch. The setup is such that the cameras record directly on to the NAS box. When i connect mp PC using Windows XP to the network i can view the cameras by typing in their IP address. I also map the NAS box share to my PC so that i can play back video from the NAS box. I now want to remotely view the cameras and playback video. I have set the cameras to use two different ports and set up port forwarding on the router to view the cameras remotely. I now want to map the share on the NAS box remotely so as to playback video. Can you please tell me which ports i need to forward to the NAS box to map it remotely and also access its contents. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Stephen

Windows NT uses NetBIOS (NBT) on ports 137, 138 (UDP) and 139 (TCP).
Windows 2000+ (2000, XP and 2003) use SMB over TCP on port 445 to browse the file share.

Statutory warning: It is not safe to open these NetBIOS or SMB ports to the internet.

Hi, Thanks for that, All that will be on this network is 2 cameras and a NAS box so i reckon it may be ok to open these ports to the internet. There will be no sensitive data on the network. Do you still think it is not safe to open these ports out to the net?????

What other options do i have???? Is it just VPN????

Thanks again,

vilp is 100% correct, give him the points.

If you open these ports to a pc running windows, the box will be part of a russian or chineese spam botnet in under an hour. A NAS box is probably running some form of samba on windows, so it is a tiny bit safer. You might want to see if the box supports sftp or even ftp or http.

The ports for 2000+ are in addition to the other ports usually.
