HP-DV4155CL laptop was freshly formatted and an OEM version of Windows XP with Service pack 2 was installed on it (this was not a factory restore of the laptop).  I installed all of the drivers needed for the laptop including the sound drivers for the SoundMax Integrated Digital audio chip set.

The problem I am having is that no XP program event sounds will play; the laptop will play all MP3 audio from iTunes, mpeg files and in game sounds.  Nothing is muted in sounds and devices.  I got the latest drivers for the sound card from HP.  When I go to the "Sounds" tab in the "Sounds and Audio Devices" box the play button is grayed out on the bottom when you can select the event and play the sound associated with it.  When I browse to the location where the event .wav files are located I can play them with Windows Media Player.

I have formatted dozens of laptops and never seen anything like this before.  I would prefer not to do a factory restore on this laptop.
