I have a field in Access that contains file numbers - they are in the format xxx.yyy; however, there are random numbers of places for the "x" portion and the "y" portion.  For example, one might be 1DL.23, another might be 23RST.4773A, etc.  I need to separate this data into a File Number field (the "x's") and a Matter Number field (the "y's").  I believe that I need to use the InStr function to determine the position of the period, then a Left function to extract the left portion and a Mid function to extract the right portion - (I got this to work in a formula in Excel), but I'm having difficulty writing the macro code in Access.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
