Unable to move media from the Unrecognized/Unknown pool to any other media pool
Experts: the problem has to do with the RMS application. We installed the Quantum LTO2 drive with the latest firmware and drivers. We are able to manage the drive utilizing the latest Quantum xTalk application.
No matter what we do the labeled media will not move from the Unknown/Unrecognized media pool to any other pool. When we try to move it a circle with a diagonal line through it.
Any idea what needs to be done to repair this situation? We utilize BackupAssist which manages NTBackup via a more user friendly interface.
Thanks in advance,
Ron Shurie

Your recommendation is exactly how we normally free media for use. Unfortunately, the problem here is that the word "free" id grayed out.

Each tape must be made available prior to the first use.
This should happen as standard for every tape when your server is installed.
However, if this has not been completed or you purchase new tapes you will need to follow the instructions below to prepare your tapes:
1. Log on to the server as Console
2. Insert the required tape into the drive
3. Right click on my computer and select Manage
4. Click on the (+) next to Removable Storage
5. Click on the (+) next to Libraries
6. click on the backup device
The tape details will now be presented in the right hand pane.
In the column marked Media Pool, if it reads Free or Backup then the tape has already been made available, or used previously and requires no further steps.
If it reads unrecognised or Import then please continue below.
7. In the right hand pane, right click on the tape you have inserted and select Free
8. At the prompt, select Yes to move the media to the free media pool
9. At the prompt, select Yes to destroy all the data
10. When the state column reads Idle, right click on the tape and select Eject
11. Select Next at the prompt
12. Select Finish at the prompt
When the operation is finished the tape will be ready for use with NTBackup/Backup Assist.
You should then be able to move it to the media pool.
