I am planning to purchase an 8-core test machine for scientific computation.  I have heard that AMD has a better architecture for dealing with memory I/O with 8-core systems, but I've also noticed that the top super computers that use 8-core nodes are using Intel processors.

I'm planning on running CentOS 5 (linux).  And I already have the software written to take advantage of the 8-cores.

Can you give me the pro's and con's of both architectures?
