Hyper V: Being asked to activate a P2V image!
I am trying to setup a test enviroment for migrating servers to a new domain.
i have taken a .VHD image of a server and loaded it within hyper v - but as soon as it loads i am asked to connect and register the copy of windows
how can i avoid this? as i dont want to cause issues with the physical server , or can i avoid?? i seem to remember with vmware convertor that i caould use sysprep and i never had any such issues!!
also! is it true you cant use the mouse on a remote session to the server running the hyper v sessions? as so far i cant!!

im trying to P2V server 2003, the dell servers all came with the licensing so they prob fit into the retail key section?(we definitly have no enterprise volume or MAK) but in saying that i have P2V some of the same servers using VMware, problem being i want to set this up in server 2008 which vmware only supports in there server 2.0 beta which i am having alot of issues with!!
Since the licensing came with the Dell server these are OEM licenses and cannot be transferred to a virtual image.

well its transfered and working 100%!!!

What OS are you trying to P2V? What type of license are you using on the new VM?
MS activation uses the systems hardware to create a "signature" for that computer. When you P2V a server you are dramatically changing every piece of hardware as far as the OS is concerned so the activation system considers this a new install so to speak. For this reason it needs to activate again. If you are using an MAK (Multiple Activation Key) (seen in enterprise Vista mostly) then you will not have a problem activating the VM, it will probably use another license though. If this is an enterprise volume-license key then you should be able to activate without a problem. If this is a retail key then you probably won't be able to activate the machine.
I don't think you can avoid this, you might be able to talk your MS sales rep into getting you a few more keys so you can P2V your stuff.
I don't know about your last question.
