Did it ever work?  If so, is there any chance that the connector inside the laptop for the speakers has become disconnected?

yep it did work and have checked the internal conections.

no luck yet
You said you've checked the obvious things, so I'm assuming you've checked to make sure none of the channels are muted in your sound settings.

No chance there's anything in your Event Viewer regarding sound?

Headphone jacks have a tang that disables the speakers when the headphones are plugged in.
Sometimes the tang gets bent back too far doesn't reconnect when the headphone jack is removed.
