Can't run fsck -yf in single-user mode - what next

Running OS 10.4.x on an eMac.  Was getting slow downs, etc.  After one restart, got a chaotic looking desktop (like a monitor issue?). After forced restart, got the endless clock under the Apple logo on gray screen.  A restart in single-user mode yielded the following:

using 1310 buffer headers and 1310 cluster IO buffer headers
USB caused wake event (EHCI)
FireWire (OHCI Apple ID 31 built-in now active, GUID 00d93ff feadac12; max speed s400

What now?  Can't get disk tray to open. Don't own DiskWarrior.

Thanks for your quick reply.  Sorry, I should have mentioned in my original post that neither of these boot options were working.  Any other thoughts?

I did get a bootable disk in (thanks for the reminder on the paperclip hole which hides behind the door on the eMac) and ran Disk Utility.

The named (HSF?) volume wasn't enabled, but when I selected the numbered (parent?) volume for REPAIR DISK it said:

Verify and Repair disk "Macintosh HD"
Invalid Volume Header
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid node structure
Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired

Yes, there's some stuff on it that's not included in my last back-up.  If I can track down a Firewire cable could I use my laptop in Target mode to shift some things onto our external harddrive?

Should I buy (or try to borrow) DiskWarrior or am I looking a fundamental failure of the drive?
My external HD will connect via either Firewire or USB, but I don't have a Firewire cable for it.

Good advice.  Thanks for all your help.
If there is enough room on your existing external, you could clone connect your eMac to your laptop by firewire, then clone the eMac's disk to a disk image on the external USB using the freeware Carbon Copy Cloner. Then use Disk Utility to re-initialize the eMac's drive and use CCC to copy the clone back to the newly initialized drive on the eMac.
