How to config a Nortel 5510 and 5520 switch?

Let me start off by saying I have never config a Nortel Swtich before. I have two of them now a 5510 and 5520. I would like to know how I can get in and set differnt VLANS up. I am very new to this and wonder if there is a GUI style way to config these switches. I here the only way to get to the software on these switches is through the console which I don't even know how to access. So please I am a newbie at this but I do want to learn it and it can't be that hard, I don't have a complex network so a couple of VLANS would do the trick, I just hope there is a way to set it up GUI instead of command line.

hi!
My congratulations! Nortels are very good switches!
as for configuration, yes, they have gui mode (requires java) and they also have Device Manager to managed them.
I would suggest using web-based method.

If I remember correctly, switch is set with default ip address 192.168.1.1, so connect your laptop to the switch, configure laptop with ip 192.168.1.3/255.255.255.0 and first of all try to ping 192.168.1.1
if successful, try opening http://192.168.1.1

I followed the instructions above but wasn't able to connect to the GUI using either of those IP's after following the steps..... Is there a way to reset the whole Switch and then start the steps above again? I also noticed that when I did the steps above and then connected an ethernet cable from the switch to my laptop it showed limted or no connectivity, also when I try to ping it gave me a transit error code and when I did a ip config my IPv6 was showing a crazy IP, so I tried to connect to that and it still didn't work?? Any thoughts?
Once you configure the switch to 192.168.192.168 you will need to set your PCs IP address to be in the same subnet as the switch (192.168.192.X). Then you should be able to access the switch.

To reset the unit at any time, with the UI button, do the following:
Press the UI button and hold it for eight seconds.
The color and status of the Pwr LED turns amber, slow blinking to
indicate that the system will reset in less than three seconds.

If you need to factory default it you have to go into the menu system via console connection.

Is there a reason you are not using a HyperTerminal session via console cable and using the menus?

How do I use HyperTerminal to get into the switch? I have a cable in the serial port on the switch, then connected the other end which plugged into my NIC card on my laptop, I go to Hyperterminal but I don't get anything???
