Problem with Outlook Express 6.0

I have been using Outlook Express 6.0 on my XP laptop for years.  Now when I first open it, I type in Username and password, Click OK the screen asking for Username and password stays there.  It will receive mail in the background. Then it comes up with this error message:

DirectDBNotifyWndProc:msimn.exe Application Error
The instruction at "0x7c91142e" referenced memory at "0x00000002".  The memory could not be "read".  Click OK to terminate the program.

Clicking OK exits Outlook
Does anybody know how to fix this?
This happened right after windows  did an automatic security update to my XP operating system.

With Outlook express, I don't think there is a repair option.   So you could export the address book, copy all your e-mails out of Outlook, remove outlook through the control panel/Add-remove/windows components, re-install, and then copy the mails and address book back in.

jimrichmond--That error message is, indeed, associated with installing new software.
What update was it?  You could probably uninstall the update from Control Panel|Add/Remove to see if the problem goes away.  If several updates were installed, uninstall one by one.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried all this and the same problem still exists.  I tried the system file checker sfc /scannow, reinstalled using the ie.inf.  I uninstalled the update that occurred immediately before this problem showed up (Security Update KB938464).   I tried doing a restore from a couple points before the date of the problem, screen said it couldn't restore, no changes made.  Any other ideas?

I notice microsoft suggests using windows live mail.  If I try this will it use the same database files so I don't lose all the emails in my input and sent boxes?  Will it use the same address book?

jimrichmond, You created a new Outlook Express identity?

Windows Live Mail is a nice alternative to Outlook Express. Windows Live Mail will migrate emails from Outlook Express.
Yes, I did try a new identity.

jimrichmond, Windows Live Mail will work. Wished we could get Outlook Express to work for you.
I appreciate all your help.  I can't believe that after trying all those things it still didn't work. Anyway I spent way too much time trying, so I had to move on.
