How to replace end of line/ carriage return characters in VB?

I have an application which stores data in a few multi-line text boxes.  Sometimes this data is destined to be sent out through emails to the parties concerned.  The emails are HTML formatted.

What I need to know is how can I replace the newlines/end of line/carriage returns (whatever pressing 'enter' in a multi-line text box inserts) with something like "<br />" or "</p><p>".

I've tried taking the text from the box and doing .replace(vbcrlf,"<br />"), but it doesn't do what it (nothing is inserted), meaning the resulting paragraphs come out as one large blob in the emails.

Anyone else have any other ideas?
