When does the memory get allocated, as and when we create a variable or when we instantiate it?

When does the memory get allocated, as and when we create a variable or when we instantiate it?

What I mean is, suppose I declare a variable

String strName;  // Is memory allocated?

Or

strName == XXXX  // Is it now the memory allocated?

Please help me in this regard.
