domain controller died, now all kinds of problems with exchange and AD

Last Modified: 2008-09-17
had a domain controller die last night (literally fried the motherboard).

previous setup:  1 vmware server with 2 guests.  one is exchange 2003 sp2 running on windows server 2003 sp1.  the other is a windows server 2003 domain controller global catalog.  Then one physical server (the one that went kaput) running windows server 2003 and was a domain controller global catalog as well.  both the vm DC and physical DC ran AD integrated DNS.

the physical DC die.  I then seized all FSMO roles over to the virtual DC.

I've now encountered a situation where any time I try to log on to the domain via the domain controller, I'm given the "no domain controller could be found" error.  I've set every server with static DNS entries to use the vm for DNS, and still no luck.

Additionally the information store on our exchange server will not start.

I've also removed all entries in active directory referring to the old domain controller.

I'd prefer no to restore the old domain controller as the hardware is retired.  I need some help getting our exchange server back on track.  any advice would help.
