Using media encryption with Backup Exec V12

I have an HP Ultrium 460 tape drive and have recently upgraded to backup exec V12.

In the past we have always password protected our media. However, symantec seem to have phased this out in V12 and now you have to use encryption. I called Symantec support about this and the technician told me the encryption side was provided by a 3rd party, was not very reliable and pretty much advised me not to use it.

Unfortunately, i could really do with having some form of security on my media as we do keep several tapes off site. Can anybody confirm whether the encryption in V12 is problematic or whether there are any other options I can look at?

Also, from reading the Backup Exec admin manual, it would seem symantec advises not to use software encryption with hardware compression. Instead it advoctaes using hardware encryption with a drive that supports the T10 encryption standard. Does anybody know whether my Ultrium 460 supports this?
