Installing SQL Server 2008 64-bit on Windows Server 2008 64-bit

I am trying to upgrade a SQL Server 2005 Standard x64 instance running on Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64 running on VMware ESX 3.5 Update 2. At first I thought it was a bad ISO and so redownloaded the media to no effect. The installer returns all green check marks with no warnings. It proceeds into the install but when it get to Install_SqlSqmShared_Cpu64_Action it get the following message about 20 times:

The only way I can kill the install is by ending the task. It creates a Dr Watson folder every time the error appears. Below is the detail text of the Install_SqlSqmShared_Cpu64 log:
