USB Flash Drive Not Recognized

I have a school computer lab that we recently re-imaged, which we do every year, with a clean image. All the computers are Dell Dimension 2350's. Since re-imaging only select usb flash drives are "seen". Some flash drives are not seen in my computer but do show up in device manager as needing drivers. Once the drivers are loaded they can be accessed through the application, but still not seen in my computer. They do not duplicate drive letters in disk manager. Other flash drives are completely invisible, not in my computer, application or disk manager, nor will the drivers load. Some flash drives work perfectly fine. I should also note that bios. chipset and updates are all current. Device manager does show the PCI Simple Communications Controller missing. Any suggestions?

Hi,

What Operating System are you using on the computers?  I'm guessing Win98 since XP and later sees USB storage without drivers.

Good Luck,

Win XP Pro. Server is MS Server 2003. Sign on is standard user with software restriction
In device manager, enable show hidden devices.  Then, with no USB devices connected, delete all the USB drives showing.  Then, turn off the PC and unplug everything, keyboard, monitor, mouse, network, power, everything.  Wait an hour.  This lets the ACPI stuff in the PC reset.  Boot back up and the PC will probably see the USB drives fine.

Are there multiple users on this computer or just 1?  There is a really nice utility called USBDLM ... if you google it,  I'm sure you can locate a copy of it.   I had a similar problem with a few computers here (same set up that you have),  and once I ran the utility the problem went away.  You have to run it for each user ... which is a pain if there are lots of users

I think is has something to do with the permission base for users,  but have never looked into it,  after I found this utility.  Hope it helps
