winlogon.exe - Application Error: The memory cold not be "read".

Hi there,

Every time I boot my computer I get this error message: "winlogon.exe - Application Error: The instruction at '0x7c912e63' referenced memory at '0x01900000'. The memory cold not be 'read'.". The error dialog box gives me the options 'OK' and 'Cancel'. But system halts by selecting either one. The instruction address is always the same but the memory address varies at each boot. The funny thing is that if I move the error dialog out of the screen, I can work on the computer for as long as I need (or as long as I don't close the error message).
I've already tried the following to solve the problem:
   - I've tried to restore a pervious windows checkpoint: No success.
   - AVG full scan: No infections or spyware found.
   - Tested the memory with three passes of the Memtest86 tool: Memory is OK.
   - Execute the 'sfc /scannow' tool: Still getting the error message.

There is no error message if I boot the computer in Safe Mode. My computer is a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4084 notebook running Windows XP Professional SP3.

Thanks in advance,

André Cotta Dourado

rpggamergirl,

I've uninstalled AVG and rebooted. First boot it 10 day without that error message.
I've never suspected AVG. It had been working normally for week before the fault appeared.
I'm new here, may I test may system for a bit longer before I accept this suggestion?

Now, since AVG isn't working for me, can you indicate any good free antivirus?

Thank you very much,

André Dourado.
orangutang,

Thanks for your help. "G-Buster Browser Defense" is a security tool installed by an ActiveX program on my bank website. Since it is a security tool, it is a kind trick to remove it.
So my laziness forced me to try rpggamergirl tip first.

Thank for your help anyway,

André Dourado
I'm using Avast for nearly 2 years now with no problems. I've been recommending it to anyone(those who opts for a free antivirus).
Family and friends are also using Avast and they've been happy with it.

Yeah, I never would've expected it to be AVG either. rpggamergirl...why?...why?!...why do you have to be so good?!?!
:)
André Dourado,
Glad to know that the problem is fixed.
Thanks for the points!

@orangutang,
Doc, you're funny, :)
The next question is your turn, I just got lucky on this one, :)
