Add Foobar2000 to the list of possible programs to play a music CD.

Where and what do I have to type into the registry to add my CD player of choice Foobar 2000 to the window (Audio CD (D:) that opens when I insert a CD?

Given foobar is so compact I dubt it has such feature but it does not hurt to ask developers.
VLC gained this facility recently.

Maybe you find something comparable around these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Windows_CD_ripping_software

(X-Windows area is irreleavant to your question - yes this is possible to autorun windows program on linux when you insert CD, though I gueess you are not interested in detail)

Thank you gheist.
Regardless of Foobar's compactness, I should be able to add it (or any program to the list).
I opened HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software - Microsoft - Windows - Autoplay Handlers - Event Handlers Default Section.  There I typed in PlayCDAudioOnArrival  REG_SZ  FoobarAutoPlayAudioCD.
Thus adding the name Foobar to the list of the other programs there.  It DOESN'T post with the other programs in the Audio CD (D:) window that asks "What Do You Want Windows To Do?"
The first option is Copy With Windows Media Player 2nd, Play with Windows Media Player and I have never installed Windows Media Player nor do I want anything to do with WMP.
Regardless, I should have the ability to add any program to the list (somehow) even if it doesn't work.
What I do is click Play with Nero Show Time Essentials (now defunct because it came as a 30 day trial with Nero 7 bundled with my DVD burner.  Because Nero can't work another window opens up.  That window is "Open With".  I can then drill down to Foobar click it and it plays.  Eject the CD and it's the same rigamaroll all over again.  Instead of clicking Nero I would like to see Foobar in that wascally window.
As you can see, I am interested in detail.

I understand what you are trying to achieve.
Look into autoplay handler added by VLC from videolan.org and create smth similar.

I went to VLC and didn't see Foobar on the site.
Let me approach this from a backward angle.  When I go into autoplay handler I don't see Windows Media Player (and it's not installed - or wanted)! but it's the first 2 options shown.  #1. Copy with Windows Media Player, and #2. Play with Windows Media Player.
So, I'm wondering, where is the source of both of these 2 Window Media Player entries listed?

If I could find and open that folder, I could enter Foobar or any name I choose and it should come up on the list as an option for "What Do You Want Windows To Do"?

In the Audio CD (D:) Window, It first asks
"What Do You Want Windows To Do"?
Copy With Windows Media Player?      Not installed, (or wanted) but offers to install and become default.
Play With Windows Media Player?          "        "                  "            "       "       "     "        "         "           "
Copy With Nero Show Time Essentials?  Past 30 day trial - brings up "Open With" Window
Play With Nero Show Time Essentials?       "     "    "       "         "        "         "       "        "
Play Audio CD using Power DVD?           Does play (perfectly - nice video to watch)
Open folder to view files?                       I don't know why Microsoft included this!
Take No Action?                                      A real Microsoft conundrum.  Insert CD to do nothing!
(A check box)(Always use this player for these files).
My Windows version (XP Professional) gives me these choices.
I would like to give this window another choice (and also remove Windows Media Player & Nero's long dead player.  (Note: I purchaced the player from Nero - it didn't take).(Ripoff).
There must be a way to edit this window and add or remove items to it.  I wish to add Foobar 2000.

At least works on vista. I do not have XP, just Vista Basic
Create file named whatever.reg containing this:
REGEDIT4
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\AutoplayHandlers\Handlers\FoobarPlayCDAudioOnArrival]
"Action"="Play with Foobar2000"
"DefaultIcon"="\"C:\\Program Files\\foobar2000\\foobar2000.exe\",0"
"InvokeProgID"="foobar2000.CDA
"InvokeVerb"="play"
"Provider"="foobar2000 playr"

Now we're getting somewhere.  THAT'S the kind of response I'm looking for.
I tried, didn't work.  I looked at other entries including Windows Media Player.  I put (  before and ) after their Actions, Defaulticons, Provider, etc, and C:\Program Files, play, wmploc.dll,6503.
We've definately in the right place because now when the "What Do You Want Windows To Do" window comes up Windows Media Player is no longer there.  At the bottom of the list before "Open folder to view files" What comes up are a series of lines in a box and underneeth the box of lines is "Using < Needed Provider >.  I've managed to "Mutate" WMP.  Unfortunately Foobar2000 doesn't post.
There may be another something we're overlooking?  I hope!

Install VLC and look for its entries in registry...
I do not have XP, but that worked on my Vista

I attempted something similar, to displace Windows Media Player with Foobar's information.  It arrived in the window.  One problem with my solution, it didn't do anything.  I feel like I'm beating a dead horse.  I feel your ideas have been close to the bone and I accept your solution.

There will be more use if you tell developers to enhance their CDA module with autoplay capability...
