Posted on 2008-09-30

I am trying to instal lthe hotfix file 127420_ENU_i386_zip.exe  from KB article number 822774 from Microsoft on a Windows 2003 Standard Edition 32-bit SP2 OS.  I receive the following error when I attempt to run the hotfix "setup could not find the update.inf file needed to update your system".

There is a update.inf file embedded within folders under the Windows folder...  Doesn't matter where I stick it....  Tried the net start Cryptographic Service...bit it was already started.  Shutdown all antivirus/firewalls during this attempt.

Please help

Two possible solutions from
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
update.inf is, of course, a file that windows update downloads for the install process and then deletes once the update is completed....i found that my problem was caused by a faulty download of the SP2 update....i went into my hard drive and deleted the download files and then went back to the windows update site and tried to download it again

Still waiting on mgmt.  BTW, the reason that I want to apply the hotfix is for the 576 Security errors that load up my event viewer.
