Hi,

We have recently been experiencing failures with SBS backup with the following error given in the log:

******************************************************************************************

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Small Business Server Backup (01).bkf created 29/09/2008 at 23:30"

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
Timeout before function completed

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
Aborting Backup.

----------------------

The operation did not successfully complete.

******************************************************************************************

At the same time the following errors are listed in event viewer:

Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      VSS
Event Category:      None
Event ID:      20
Date:            29/09/2008
Time:            23:30:12
User:            N/A
Computer:      SERVER
Description:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: A critical component required by the Volume Shadow Copy service is not registered.  This might happened if an error occurred during Windows setup or during installation of a Shadow Copy provider.  The error returned from CoCreateInstance on class with CLSID {faf53cc4-bd73-4e36-83f1-2b23f46e513e} and Name VSSEvent is [0x80040154].

******************************************************************************************

And also:

Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      VSS
Event Category:      None
Event ID:      8193
Date:            29/09/2008
Time:            23:30:12
User:            N/A
Computer:      SERVER
Description:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance.  hr = 0x80040154.

******************************************************************************************

Also when you open command prompt and run "VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS" nothing is displayed.

I've looked at various forum posts that describe re-registering dlls such as MS KB940032 but nothing seems to be working!!

Any help to get this resolved would be much appreciated....

Thanks!

Okay then... I do realize you say you've reregistered dll's, but please enter the following commands:
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll

Then, be sure to reboot the server.

Right, I've done that and i'm still getting the same SBS backup log error. However, the event log errors (20 and 8193) are no longer being reported. Instead the error below now appears:

You may need this hotfix then:

Ok, I've tried installing that hotfix again and I just get the message saying that "the service pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying"

I've also just found this forum post that describes reinstalling COM+ if the dll reregistrations don't work (go to the bottom of the page):
http://forums.techarena.in/small-business-server/331227.htm

******************************************************************************************
On a post SP1 System

----------------------------------

Reinstall COM+

1. Backup and then delete HKLM\Software\Microsoft\COM3

2. Boot to Recovery console and rename clbcatq.dll to ~clbcatq.dll. Be
sure to use
the tilde.

3. Boot to normal mode and in Control Panel, open the Add or Remove
Programs tool,
and then open the Add/Remove Windows Components tool. Do not make any
changes, just
click "Next". This reinstalls COM+.

NOTE: You must have your Windows Server 2003 SP1 files available during
this step.
******************************************************************************************

I must say though that I'm a bit reluctant to do this without a current backup - do you have any other suggestions I could try before this or do you think its the best option?

Thanks,

Ben

I think I would try to get a good backup.  Download Acronis True Image for SBS Trial Version and you can use that to get a full backup.  http://www.acronis.com/smb/products/ATISBS/

Ok, I've installed Acronis and now have some up to date backups - thanks for the suggestion.

I've rebuilt COM+ as per Microsoft's KB315296:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315296

And also attempted reregistering all the dlls again.. All without success...

Do you have any other suggestions I could try or do you think that this issue maybe complex enough to warrant a call to Microsoft PSS?

Since you have done all the possible fixes for this issue, I'd say that you really should call Microsoft CSS at this point because there does seem to be something deeper that would be very difficult for me to help you with in this type of forum.

Ok, I called MS support and its now all working ok...!

Aside from the usual MSDE SQL instances listed as a services (e.g. MSSQL$SBSMONITORING, MSSQL$SHAREPOINT) there was also one called MSSQLSERVER. Apparently this should only be there if we have the full version of SQL installed (which we dont). I dont know where this service came from, but disabling it allowed the VSS LIST WRITERS command to work correctly and therefore the backup also.

Jeff - thanks anyway for you suggestions.

Regards,
Ben
