how to deliver reduced size images and pdf preview on the fly

I have records that I display in a grid on a web page.
Each record refers to a document or image on the server.
I would like to be able to display a small preview of each image/document in a column of the grid.

The challenge is that the source files may be small gif files or large bmp files or small jpg files.
Or if the document is a pdf they would like to see a preview of the first page.

Is there a way to do this without having to create and store smaller images in advance?
If not, then that might be an option as well.

Thanks,

Kevin.
