Vista system will not allow us to download Windows Updates

Relatively new HP desktop with Vista Home Premium.  Upon attempting to download Windows Updates, we get error 80070490.  I've checked the web for a solution and found it to be confusing.  One suggestion is to download Update KB938371.  However, the instructions seem quite complicated.  I can't imagine that MS would make us do this just to get updates.  Can someone please confirm the right way to fix this problem?  Thanks.

Alright, this problem occurs only if you have version of WINDOWS VISTA which does not have Service Pack 1 installed.Microsoft has suggested to update your WINDOWS VISTA with new original disc with SP1.I dont know you have the DVD with you or not,but i would suggest you to download the pack, install it and than check.Best of luck.
