I have a web form that allows for uploading of a pdf file.   Is there a way to create an image based on the first page of the pdf file?

There are a number of products that allow you to render PDF. If you want to do it for free, take a look at Ghostscript (http://www.ghostscript.com). One other option is the XPdfRasterizer (http://www.glyphandcog.com/XpdfRasterizer.html). You can find more commercial packages at the PDFStore (http://www.pdfstore.com)

Does Ghostcript run within a .net applicationtion?  I'm having trouble navigating their site.  I'd prefer to get some code or an opensource solution.

Ghostscript is opensource, you can download the source code from here: http://ghostscript.com/releases/ - just pick the latest release.

It is a standalone application, so you would have to make a call to an external program in your .NET app to start GS. When you buy xpdfrasterizer, you get a Windows DLL - so you can call it directly from within your application.
