My personal favorite for backing up ESX guests is esXpress.  www.esxpress.com.

They have a free version of their software that you can use in perpetuity if you want, although it lacks a lot of the features of the paid versions. This will be true of any backup software though.  You wont find anything exceptional if your price range is "free".

Well look at it this way:

You have to use agentbased backup solution if you have any database/exchange servers arround. And this is what we used to have from the physical world.

Virtualization opens up new possibilities to do easier image-level backup of the VMs. However its not always just enough - hence the above line. Why do image-level backups? - because you will be able to do a quicker restore of an entire VM. This do cost some money - unless you're able to do some scripting yourself.

I had a customer destroying an SQL database server system parition and the db partition. I did an image-level restore with vRanger Pro and VCB to get the server up an running. This took arround 30 minutes and then I used the backup agent software to restore to the newest version of the databases. The server was only down little over an hour.

Hope you can use the info.

Assuming you already have a backup software (like BackupExec) solution in place. The FREE solution is to use the VCB software from a machine with access to the LUNs. I do this from my VI Center server (Windows) and the backup the snapshots.
Now, each backup solution has a set of scripts that can be adjsted to work with VCB.
Like the privious comment. You will need an agent to backup databases or exchange information stores, otherwise you will have some integrity issues.
