asked on

laptop CD/DVD Drive, Touchpad, USB stopped working

I have HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop notebook.
I have end up into number of problems, not sure whether its hardware problem or software problem/

In order time started not working
1. CD/DVD Drive
2. Touchpad
3. USB ports

I have checked in Device manager ( Show hidden drive), i can see listing for all three.
For touchpad, "Synaptics PS/2 Port touch pad" is having yellow sign, did unistall and update device as well. but still see yellow sign after reboot.
Device status message says " Device is not installed or not working properly"
Same status goes for other CD/DVD Rom listing .
However for USB port its listed and device status message "working" - don't know then wht it is not working.

Could someone help and guide to resolve the problem.
I'm tired working without mouse/CD/USB

I did system restore for date 6months back - but it didn't helped.
Wondering should i try PC recovery option????
Copy data off first, then use recovery partition see if it would help.
Boot the unit with a bootable Live CD like Knoppix or Ubuntu. If the problems persist, they're probably hardware-related, or you have accidentally disabled them in your BIOS setup. If the problems *don't* appear in the alternate environment, it's a windows problem.

Hi rid, could you pls elaborate exactly do i need to check in BIOS ( im able to go into BIOS mode).

Secondly, while further exploring it seems Synaptics touch pad driver has some problem. i've downloaded from synaptics site but could not install (n update) since warning message in bold appeared "No mmicrosoft signature - could lead to operating instability"

rid - don't have any bootable CD that you have mentioned with me.

Any idea about USB port not working. Can't use anything - mouse, ipod, external hard drive etc.
Device manager shows all USB ports are working properly

Really scared about the PC Recovery option, want to make sure that would help bcos i should not end up losing data and back to same result ( touchpad, USB not working)

Please suggest

knoppix download size is huge ( ~650MB), can't download it since its keep breaking in between.
I'm trying if i can get any other bootable CD.

Installing Synaptics driver didn't helped. Not sure why ??

No light turns on after puuting optical mouse in USB port.
Same goes for other devices in USB port.
Can't back up laptop data since external harddrive not detected.

is there any way to find what exactly the problem with USB port and enabling it.
[Devices manager shows USB port ok]

What do you suggest at this stage?
I would like to go for PC recovery only a last resort ( when everything else fails)

Pls Suggest

"No light turns on after puuting optical mouse in USB port"

The power in your USB ports is gone, meaning a motherboard problem. You may have to get a PCMCIA USB adapter to get functioning USB ports. The power problem may spill over to the internal pointing device, as well as the CD drive (possibly, but not probable; the optical unit must be tested with a bootable CD to exclude windows/drivers problems).
