External Hard Drive Recommendation for Dell Inspiron 531

I have had on-going issues since I purchased a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop.  For 2 days I was unable to access "system restore" and suddenly for no apparent reason it worked fine - VERY annoying because of the hours I spent attempting to fix the matter.
Now I realize that I MUST purchase an external hard drive but would like to get some recommendations from all of you computer geniuses - thanks for your help.

I suggest getting a Maxtor One Touch or a Lacie.

500GB or 1TB if you have the funds.

If you wish to have super fault tolerant.  The new Maxtors have Raid 1 Mirror (this means if one HD in the external enclosure dies, the other will still have the data)
