I can't get this "Critical IE7 Security Update" to Install.  Running XPSP3, and IE7 ver no. is 7.0.5730.11.
This extract from the logfile seems to indicate an incorrect version?

1) You will need to be in computer adminstrator mode to run these two

a) Windows scripting Host to 5.7 save to your desktop

support.microsoft.com/kb/952830

Run this

b) also save this to your Windows installer 4.5 desktop.

support.microsoft.com/kb/942288

Run this

2) Perform the folowwing in a command window, click on start, run, enter the letters "cmd"

net stop wuauserv

rmdir c:\%windir%\SoftwareDistribution

Regsvr32 WUPS2.dll

net start wuauserv

Reboot. Try installing the VML fix now.

1) ensures reliable environment to install programs.

2) Does two things. Removes any programs that are being attempted to install, and clears your folder for BITS. and registers any left over problems from Sp2. If Sp3 was installed before sp2 completed its setup routines. Fixes windows updates.

Jonvee -
What does the second suggestion you list above do?  I have had intermittent "update" problems for the last couple of years.  You mention it "ensures a reliable environment". I may want to do that if it works, although in your answer #1, the link seemed to show that some folks could not get those two operations to work.
The problem was actually resolved by simply downloading the latest version of IE7 from Microsoft and letting it install over the existing.  It added any patches it needed during the installation process, and the version now ends in ".13".  But if there is a way to "clean up" the update process, I'd like to try it if I understand what it is doing.

My 2nd comment was simply an expansion of the 1st comment, although i could have clarified by writing <quote> and <unquote> around the pasted text.

Reference>

Could be re-written thus>
2) Does two things. Removes any programs that are in the process of being installed.  It also registers any "left over problems" from SP2, in the event that SP3 was installed before SP2 had completed its setup routines. It can fix certain Windows updates scenarios.

i simply took this statement at face value.

>I have had intermittent "update" problems for the last couple of years<
Update problems are many and varied, each one having to be investigated(usually) separately.
Here's a list which was published By Marc Liron.  Click on a particular error code for further details>
"Windows Update Errors":
http://www.updatexp.com/windows-update-errors.html

Occasionally an apparant solution will not work, which is the main reason i suggested the 'Dial-a-fix' which has worked for others.

If your update system now works ok i would be inclined to resist any attempt to "clean up" the update process, but just monitor it and watch for any spurious 'error' and deal with each individually.  Hope that has helped clarify.
Thank you.
