Outlook disconected from exchange server 2003

We have a exchange server 2003 running for many years, but sins yesterday the outlook clients cant conect anymore to the server.
We did folowing tests on the client computers:

1) can the client computers ping the machine name (i.e. does it resolve the IP address)
2) is there anything in the Exchange Server's Event Log
3) Are the Exchange Services Started OK
4) is it ALL client machines .. how many? (i.e. has there been a group policy change which may affect everyone)
5) from within Outlook, try holding down CTRL and right clicking the Outlook Icon in the system tray (near the clock) .. you should get a new option - "connection status".. what does this day?
