How do I install a new tape drive?

We just got a new Dell SDLT 320 external tape drive and need some steps on how to install it. We already have an internal tape drive that this will be replacing. I am using backup exec 10 and running windows 2003 server.

What are the steps to install tape drive?

In a nutshell, assuming it's an LVD device (most DLT260/320s are) you need a SCSI adapter for your machine - make sure it's compatible with Windows Server 2003 and system interface (ie, is it PCI? PCI-X? PCI-E?) - preferably running at u160, and a suitable SCSI cable and terminator (u160 or u320). Switch off the machine, install the controller, attach the drive to the controller via the cable, & power up. Windows will detect the controller and install the driver for it. You can either reboot so it then recognises the tape drive, or go into Device Manager, click "Other Devices", and right click on the drive and "Update Driver".

And away you go...
